ARSON is suspected in a $150,000 fire which gutted a Mitchell Park townhouse overnight.

One of the two occupants of the two-storey home has reported being woken by the noise of a downstairs window smashing before discovering a fire in the lounge room.

Crews were called to Cumbria Ct about 3.30am this morning after neighbours made multiple 000 calls.

Eighteen firefighters battled the blaze and managed to stop the fire from spreading to adjoining properties.

One of the residents was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation

.Neighbours in the quiet court heard screams and yelling for about an hour before the blaze started.

"I heard yelling and screaming at about 3am," one neighbour said.

"It's a bit frightening it's usually quiet. The screaming and yelling went on for about an hour."

It is alleged that a Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window of the Cumbria Ct property about 3.30pm.

"We heard a sound like glass smashing," Faraha Nawaz said.

"The fire started downstairs and gradually spread upstairs and there were huge flames.

"We were afraid that somebody was home."

The fire is being treated as suspicious, with detectives and fire cause investigators at the scene.
