Yes, it really was that hot last night

IF you had to peel yourself from your sheets this morning it could have something to do with the temperature only dropping to a low of 27.5C overnight.

The mercury reached its low of 27.5C at 12.17am today and then hovered around 30C for much of the morning. The temperature was sitting at 29.2C at 6.30am.

A top of 39C is forecast in the city today before a change swings through later this evening, bringing cooler southerly winds and much-needed relief.

Another warm autumn night marked Adelaide's ninth consecutive minimum temperature above 20C this month and today's top will mark the 11th consecutive day above 30C.

Today's hot conditions have prompted total fire bans in all but two of the state's districts.

Total fire bans are in place for the Adelaide metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Mid North, Yorke Peninsula, Murraylands, Riverland, Upper South East, Lower South East, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, North West Pastoral, Lower Eyre Peninsula and West Coast districts until midnight tonight.

SA Police Operation Nomad patrols will target bushfire prone areas throughout the day.

A high of 25C is forecast in Adelaide tomorrow and maxima in the mid-to-high 20Cs are predicted for the rest of the week.
