WORK to cover Glenelg Jetty's contentious pipes will start within weeks.

Acting project manager Jenny Deans said work would be done in two stages.

"Work to screen the pipes will begin in April and take about two or three weeks," she said.

"The screen will support the decking that covers the pipes to allow access on the southern side for fishing and shield the pipes for people at the beach."

Synthetic mesh decking would be installed over the pipes in July, she said.

The pipes were placed along the length of the jetty in October as part of the $25 million project to move sand from Glenelg to southern beaches and the Torrens Outlet to West Beach.

But community outcry over their appearance prompted the State Government to extend the width of the jetty to cover the pipes.

The cost of enclosing the pipes and widening the jetty has not been disclosed by the Government.

A spokesman said it would be incorporated into the project's overall budget.
