ADELAIDE'S Myer Centre will undergo a $30 million upgrade, the first major overhaul of the Rundle Mall building since it opened more than 20 years ago.
The Advertiser can reveal owners Colonial First State Global Asset Management will pump around $10 million into a revamp of the six-storey building, in response to competition from major mall retailers.
The investment comes on top of the already announced $20 million Myer will spend on a makeover of its department store at the heart of the Myer Centre building.
The upgrade of the Rundle Mall Myer Centre - which cost $1 billion when it opened on June 1991 - will include:
NEW centre entries, awning finishes and lighting.
UPGRADES to the Adelaide's largest food court to give it an "urban" feel.
ARTWORK in the atrium.
NEW furniture in the Mall and upgrades to the lifts and parenting room.
Colonial First State head of investor relations and communication Penny Berger said the centre would undergo a "significant transformation".
"This major upgrade has been in the planning and design for some time and it is opportune that these works will be undertaken concurrently with the Rundle Mall redevelopment," she said.
Myer Centre Adelaide manager Peter Lee said: "The Myer Centre Adelaide has long been a retail and social icon of Adelaide and Rundle Mall. We are pleased to offer a fresh shopping experience."
Work is expected to begin later this year subject to council approvals.
