YOU may have seen Adelaide at night before, but not like this.

This is a view of the City of Churches, taken by Canadian astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield, who is orbiting Earth as commander of the International Space Station (ISS).

Col Hadfield has more than 570,000 followers on Twitter (@Cmdr_Hadfield) and has been tweeting photos of cities from space.

Yesterday, it was Adelaide's turn.

"Adelaide, captial of South Australia, from space," he tweeted.

"The square of downtown parks really stands out."

Col Hadfield was the first Canadian in space and the first Canadian commander of the ISS.

According to the Canadian Space Agency website, he left earth on a Soyuz spacecraft on December 12 and took up his five-month mission on the ISS this month.
