SWIMMERS will be able to access Unley Pool for free every Friday afternoon for the final eight weeks of the summer swimming season.
Unley Council last night voted to allow free access to the Ethel St centre after 5pm on Fridays from April 5 to promote fitness and attract more families.
The move is expected to cost the council $148 per evening but it expects to recoup some of the loss through extra kiosk sales.
The pool is open until about 8pm on Fridays.
Casual entry normally costs $6.30 for adults, $5 for concession and children over five and $19 for a family of two adults and three children.
Councillor Peter Hughes took the idea to last night's council meeting, where it was overwhelmingly supported.
"Fridays are the quietest night of the week," Cr Hughes said.
"In the last eight weeks there have only been two families (attending after 5pm on Fridays) and this is a chance to turn that around.
"I think the concept has great merit ... it's a solution to promote use."
Pool manager Nathan Byles said the free entry was an SA first.
"(It) creates a fantastic opportunity for the community to enjoy the centre and kick start their health and fitness regime," he said.
