Crash victim fighting for life

A MAN is fighting for life in hospital after a serious head-on collision between a car and truck at Upper Sturt this morning.

The man's Mitsubishi Magna station wagon collided head-on with an Isuzu prime mover on Upper Sturt Rd about 7.45am.

The man, aged in his 60s, became trapped in the wreckage of the car, which then caught fire.

Residents rushed to his aid, dousing the flames with a fire extinguisher and gravel from the side of the road.

The man was cut from the wreckage and taken to Flinders Medical Centre, an SA Ambulance spokeswoman said.

He is in a critical condition.

The truck driver was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a stable condition.

Upper Sturt Rd has been closed to traffic in both directions since the collision, while Major Crash officers investigate.

The road was expected to re-open about 1pm.

Police have called for any witnesses of the crash to come forward. They can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
