THE Education Department is hiring more investigators to look into alleged serious misconduct by its employees.

The department has advertised for two senior investigators to conduct "efficient and objective investigations into allegations of serious misconduct".

Education Minister Jennifer Rankine said there were 51 misconduct cases before the department last year, of which 24 were resolved during the year.

This was down 27 per cent from 70 cases in 2008, she said.

Opposition education spokesman David Pisoni called on Ms Rankine to say whether the department was hiring more investigators to clear a backlog or to deal with an surge in allegations.

Ms Rankine said the extra Special Investigations Unit staff were being hired "to ensure that we have timely and thorough investigations".

Ms Rankine also confirmed:

THE Police Commissioner will be made aware of all school-based sexual assaults on students.

SHE has appointed a new deputy chief executive officer within the education department with the "clear responsibility of child safety right across the department'.

Mr Pisoni said parents needed to be "confident they are being told about any instance of serious teacher misconduct that their children may be exposed to".
