SOLAR panels will be installed on six Salisbury community centres to help slash rising power bills.

More than $130,000 will be spent for panels at the Bagster Rd, Burton, Morella, Paddocks, Pooraka Farm and Salisbury East community centres by next summer.

Each centre spends $9000 a year on average on electricity.

Salisbury Council will also investigate putting solar panel on the Jack Young Centre, Twelve 25 youth centre and the Mawson Centre.

Cr Betty Gill said the move would save money in the long run.

"I know with the Bagster Community Centre they are paying over $10,000 on electricity each year, so this project could save them up to $4000 a year," she said.

"Many of our community centres are struggling to pay their bills and this will mean that they don't have to worry about whether they can run a program or put the airconditioner on."

Cr Alex Coates said community centres were under huge pressure to meet costs.

"It is important that we get behind this because electricity prices are only going up," he said.

The council will fund the project out of its 2013/14 budget.
